MAYOR NAHEED NENSHI PREACHES AT KNOX UNITED CHURCH ON EASTER SUNDAY

During Lent, Knox has shared its pulpit on Sunday mornings with leaders from indigenous, Buddhist, Muslim, Sikh, and Jewish communities. On Easter Sunday (April 16, 2017), Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is stepping into the Knox pulpit.

Greg Glatz, one of the ministers at Knox United, explains the choice of Nenshi as speaker on Easter Sunday as follows:

Easter is the day the church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, but resurrection is not for Jesus alone. Resurrection is for everyone: new life, second chances, hope, another start–this is the message of Easter Sunday in its broadest and fullest sense. As Jordan Cantwell, the Moderator of the United Church of Canada said this holy week, “To be an Easter people is to be those who embody that fierce, unrelenting love that says to the forces of death and hate that continue to operate today: ‘God is a God of love and of life, and we will be a people of love and of life.’”

We believe that resurrection is something we experience most completely in our connection with others: “a rising tide lifts all boats.” And so, our well-being as a church community should increase the well-being of the community at large. Similarly, the well-being of the community at large increases the well being of our church community. For that reason, we are delighted to have Mayor Naheed Nenshi in the pulpit this morning at Knox, on this most holy of days. Our mayor is here as a leader of this city and a member of the community—a partner among partners in making Calgary a great city for everyone.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi is currently serving his second term as Calgary’s 36th mayor. Prior to his election in 2010, he was Canada’s first tenured professor in the field of nonprofit management at Mount Royal University’s Bissett School of Business. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (with distinction) from the University of Calgary and a Master in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he studied as a Kennedy Fellow.

In 2006, Nenshi was the lead author of Building Up: Making Canada’s Cities Magnets for Talent and Engines of Development. His 2010 campaign for mayor was dubbed the “Purple Revolution” because of its broad appeal both to liberal red and conservative blue voters. In 2011, Mayor Nenshi became the first Calgary mayor to accept the role of grand marshal of the Calgary Pride parade and in 2013, the mayor proclaimed a “Trans Day of Visibility.” Mayor Nenshi was awarded the World Mayor prize in 2014 by the City Mayors Foundation—the first Canadian mayor to win the award—and has been a strong supporter of vibrant and connected communities during his two terms as mayor. Mayor Nenshi is currently promoting the #3ThreeThingsforCanada campaign to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.

Doors open Easter Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and coffee is served. Service begins at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

WEAR PURPLE on Easter Sunday—it’s a great Easter colour! 🙂
