Kirkin’ of the Tartans

June 14, 2015 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The St. Andrew’s Caledonian Pipe Band and Society Choir will bring their music and history to our Sunday morning service, June 14th.

They will present a special service called the  “Kirkin’ o’ th’ Tartan.,” Kirking, from the Scottish Gaelic word kirk, means church. In this usage, it means Blessing of the Tartans. It is a celebration of Scottish heritage and culture.

Tartans are the traditional plaid emblems of Scottish clans. But, did you know that Canada has its own tartan? It’s called the Maple Leaf tartan. And every province has its own tartan, too. So does the City of Calgary and even West Jet Airlines! As you can see, you don’t have to be Scottish to wear a tartan!

We encourage you to wear some kind of tartan on Sunday, June 14th (a scarf, a kilt, a tie), or bring a swatch of tartan to be blessed. Join in the celebration of the Scottish culture!

And you’ll love singing “Amazing Grace” at the end of the service.
