University of Bahamas Choir

April 29 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

The University of The Bahamas Concert Choir was founded in 1998 by former long-time director, Audrey Dean-Wright. Consisting of students and a few faculty members from a dozen different disciplines, the group strives for choral excellence and to be a good ambassador for UB and The Bahamas at large. Audiences have been thrilled with the Choir’s diverse repertoire; but especially the vibrant and exhilarating folk music of The Bahamas with its syncopated rhythms, choreography, storytelling and rhythmic accompaniment.

In 2012 the Choir hosted and performed with ‘105 Voices of History,’ a Kennedy Center Initiative. In 2013, the ensemble delighted a New York audience with the programme, From Classical to Calypso. As the only non-American member of the Southeast African-American Collegiate Music Festival (SEAAC), the Concert Choir has concertized under the baton of outstanding composers such as Moses Hogan, Lena Mc Lin, Mark Butler, Uzee Brown and Rosephanye Powell. Impressed with its musicality, Uzee Brown composed and published ‘Dete Ta Deo’, dedicated to the then College of The Bahamas Concert Choir and Audrey Dean-Wright, director. And the choir once had the distinct honour of performing for the President of Botswana

In 2013, the College of The Bahamas hosted the SEEAC Festival, which resulted in an invitation to sing at Lincoln Center in 2014. While there the Choir also gave concerts in New York City and appeared on the Manhattan Neighbourhood Television Network. In 2016, the Choir had the distinct honour of being asked by the Government of The Bahamas to represent the country at a festival in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. Of historic note was the 2016 Charter Day Ceremony performance for the University of The Bahamas and the Inauguration of Dr. Rodney Smith as President, culminating, in a most fitting way, Mrs. Wright’s outstanding directorship of the choir.

Under the direction of Dr. Paul Jones for the last two years, the UB Concert Choir has continued its tradition of excellence while expanding the diversity of its repertoire, performing all music from memory, and increasing its membership by 25%. We have made a conscious effort to perform in various Nassauvian churches in 2017-18: Anglican, Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Presbyterian, and performed at the first annual President’s Soiree in addition to regular Christmas and Spring concerts. In 2018 the Choir will tour Alberta, Canada with visits to Calgary, Banff, Jasper and Edmonton. In 2019 we plan to tour some of The Bahamas’ amazingly beautiful Family Islands.

The UB Pop Band was formed in 2017 by Christian Justilien, Head of the Department of Visual & Performing Arts. Consisting of student vocalists and instrumentalists performing in a variety of styles and genres, the Pop Band is a versatile group frequently engaged for diverse on- and off-campus events like the UB Christmas Concert, UTEB Gala, the President’s Soiree, and a special concert celebrating the music of Bahamian composer, Eric Minns.
