My participation in the Lenten reflection is way out of my comfort zone, but I decided that it would be a good Lenten journey for me, rather than denying myself of something, I prefer to add a spiritual challenge to honour this time.
The verses in John resonated most with me , because of the “servant” theme. Jesus sometimes teaches with parables, but at other times, with “action”.
This is definitely one of those “action” teachings.
Jesus is showing his disciples that he came to serve not to rule. This is true love, serving others before serving myself, even those who do not normally get such devotion, he washes all their feet, even Judas’. “Love one another, as I have loved you.”
Jesus was saying,
“You need your feet washed? I will wash them.”
“You need a meal? I will feed you.”
“Are there burdens I can remove from you?
I will take them, I love you.”
One personal experience with Knox I found meaningful was at the Maundy Thursday service. Before the meal, there was a prayer of course, but we lined up by twos and washed each others hands.
May Jesus’ loving spirit guide and help us to lay open ourselves to the service of others, particularly those we might prefer to forget.
