The first passage is from the Old Testament and presents Jacob on a journey, where he meets his cousin Rachel and other kin, aids shepherds tending their flocks by removing the stone and watering the sheep from the well.

Jacob appears to discover family and to serve others on his journey.

The second much shorter passage from the New Testament uses different symbols, and appears to be a lesson or notice. It may be a warning that our ancestors or those before us, had been baptized by the “Rock that is Christ” and that they are still human and subject to failings.

On reflection the common theme, if there is one, is about family.

As Laban said to Jacob, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.”

We are all members in God’s family, “under the cloud”, a reference to God’s divine presence (Corinthians).  ♥
