Scriptures for today
- Isaiah 50:4-9a
- Psalm 70
- Hebrews 12:1-3
- John 13:21-32
Of the four scriptures I was given on which to reflect I chose Hebrews 12:1-3. I read the others from Isaiah, Psalms and John. They did not speak to me in the way the passage from Hebrews did; in fact, I did not know how to interpret them.
I have not been a reader of the Bible, but have gained my knowledge and understanding of it from Bible studies, sermons, and books. I have also gained understanding through my life experiences with Knox, the YWCA at all levels, Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada, Council of Christians and Jews, Calgary Inter-Faith, and The Jesus Seminar. We have been blessed at Knox to have such speakers as John Spong, Dominic Crossan, Amy Jean Levine, Karen King, Marcus Borg, all scholars of The Jesus Seminar, who have studied the scriptures in great depth. What a learning, growing experience that was!
And now to Hebrews 12:1-3. Leading up to this in Hebrews 11, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses and others are described as witnesses to the faith.
Verse 1 begins, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses let us also lay aside every weight.”
In my life I have surrounded myself with people of faith who want to make a difference. They have been my mentors and my support, in spite of all those things that can weigh one down. There are many things that can discourage one and make one lose hope for ever being a power for change. For example the sins of the world that we are bombarded with every day as we listen to the radio, watch TV, read the papers.
With Jesus being our example, the “pioneer and perfecter of our faith,” we can move forward “with perseverance the race that is set before us.” Following the teachings of Jesus and with faith in God, knowing that God is on our side and walks with us, we are empowered to move forward in our journey to make a difference, with a sense of joy. ♥
